If getting a new watch is one of your wishes, there’s something very important Meccaniche Veneziane needs to tell you. You must know that, although automatic watches virtually have a lifetime durability, there are some important precautions which are fundamental for the conservation of your watch. In fact, regular maintenance can preserve watches from damages, breaks, malfunctions.
Considering all the different situations we regularly have to face every day, this might seem a bit challenging, but you absolutely don’t need to be worried about anything: we’ll guide you step by step, by showing you the most common cases in which your timepiece’s maintenance could be put at risk and by revealing you all the secrets and techniques you need to master to avoid unpleasant situations.
So, give us a minute of your time and you’ll surely find this useful (or at least we hope so).
Beware magnetic fields! In fact, the running of a good movement is not generally influenced by the most commons magnetic fields and modern watches are designed at this goal, however, the closeness to stronger magnets could condition the right working of the movement, causing little malfunctions which are not otherwise understandable.
Be careful, because not every moment might be the best! In the matter of preserving the correct running of movements, it is advisable not to change the date in the time period between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.
This advice is supported by technical reasons: in fact, the date change system works thanks to different mechanisms: during the time period between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. a cogwheel is rotating in order to change the date number exactly at midnight. A manual change of the date could hinder the ordinary rotation of the movement.
Remember that several damages could also be caused by the exposition to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Although the temperature of a watch is a bit different from the climatic one, we suggest not to frequently expose an automatic watch in places where the temperature is over 60°C or below 0°C.
In fact, these extreme weather conditions could ruin your watch and bring to an incorrect lubrification of its micro-components.
You’re perfectly right, but don’t forget that it is also recommended not to use the watch during sports activities characterized by excessive and improper motions of the arm, such as in tennis or basketball: in fact, all the automatic movements are designed in order to work with a quiet and regular swinging of the arm.
Let’s see the working of the crown and the underwater use of a watch. It’s very important to pull in the crown after every change of date or time, avoiding infiltrations of dirt or water: for this reason, we suggest to make sure that the crown is always screwed tightly. The smallest infiltrations can damage an automatic watch very seriously, be very careful while you’re closing the crown.
At last, after an underwater use, we suggest to wash the watch with clean water and to dry it with a soft cloth for washing away all kind of dirt or sea salt which could ruin the brightness of the case. For this purpose, it’s also recommended to put off the watch during a bath or activities where the watch could be exposed to chemical products and solvents.
Did you manage to survive this guide? Well, if you did, you must now be an expert! If you got a bit scared, bear in mind that owning a watch doesn’t mean renouncing to experiencing life-changing adventures or avoiding any possible source of danger on your path. A good-quality timepiece - along with some necessary precautions - can allow you to enjoy both your days and your watch.
